Web site reviews: MySpace.com

There are a lot of people out there who call MySpace stupid, for little girls and boys only, a replacement for life, a substitute for courage, etc. I have one thing to say to them, “MySpace is exactly not for arrogant people, such as yourself”.

The truth is that MySpace can be a problem for some. Some people become addicted to the constant interaction and attention, myself included. There are stalkers and pedophiles. In addition, some people actually do use this as a replacement for real life. That is not always a bad thing.

For a long time, I have isolated myself from people. One of the symptoms of MS is withdrawal from society. This is also a symptom of a host of other diseases and mental disorders. There are many of us out there who live in varying levels of isolation, not by choice. Withdrawal can also come from a physical standpoint; some people are incapable of getting out of their house. This lack of interaction can be devastating for those individuals. When people actually need the most support, they become the most isolated.

For me, MySpace is a portal into a world of possibilities. I can be anyone: funny, healthy, sarcastic, beautiful, mean, arrogant, all with no repercussions. I have the freedom to be myself, and people are listening. There is a comfort to knowing that at any time of day or night, you can find someone to talk to. It is like an amazingly huge support network.

As with any Internet venture, you must use caution. You need to do the same in real life. Just like real life, you can get psychos, stalkers, and any number of individuals with psychiatric illnesses. However, you can also find real people, good people. The one thing that has surprised me the most about my MySpace experience is the number of people who I talk to that I normally would never have given the time of day in the real world. These people are funny, caring, gifted and interesting. These are the people who have helped me to feel less isolated.

I recently have come into contact with individuals from my past. Having long-term memory loss, this has been a blessing. They have helped me find those memories I had forgotten. This would have never happened in the real world. I would have never been given the chance to have that glimpse into the world that they know now. It is truly amazing.

MySpace is in fact a virtual reality. It will never be a replacement for real life, though. People cannot copulate through the Internet; however, artificial insemination is available. It will never replace the bonds that are created from a mother to a child. It can never replace the comfort of the physical touch that is so essential for human life. It can, however, become a way to experience life for those who cannot. It can be a window to a new world. It is a new world. It is MySpace.
